E-commerce major Flipkart silently released its 'Flipkart
Nearby' app over the weekend on Google Play store. The service has been launched in
select neighbourhoods of Bengaluru.
Flipkart's Nearby App divides groceries and food into categories like branded food, groceries,
staples, beverages, breakfast, dairy, and eggs, to try and provide a supermarket experience
on the app.
Apart from groceries, the app also lists personal care products, health and wellness products
like sanitary napkins and condoms, baby care products, and household supplies.
Only a few neighbourhoods of Bengaluru are currently covered by Flipkart Nearby - these
include Koramangala, HSR Layout, BTM Layout, Ejipura, Jayanagar, JP Nagar, and
Bellandur.
Users can place orders at any time of the day through the Flipkart Nearby app, which seems
to be only available on Android at present. Deliveries are made from 10am to 8pm. Flipkart
doesn't seem to have have a Web equivalent of the same feature that can be accessed on
the browser. The app currently only accepts cash-on-delivery for payments.
Other e-commerce offerings in the grocery delivery space include Amazon's Kirana Now,
launched in India in March. Other major players in the hyperlocal grocery delivery space in
India include PepperTap which raised closed a Series B funding round of $36 million
(roughly Rs. 237 crores) in September,Grofers, Bigbasket, and Ola Store.
